NSD Records was recently acquired by The Gabriel Music Group. It was formed in 1972 by Joe and Betty Gibson as part of NSD/Soundwaves Records
. The NSD Records
story is obviously one of success having charting more than 60% of their first 60 records. This was unheard of at the time for any independent record label.
NSD
was instrumental in launching the careers of Alabama, Gene Watson, Narvel Felts, Aaron Tippin and many others. The memorable Elmo and Patsy hit “Grandma Got Ran Over
By a Reindeer” is among many of the labels successful releases. In addition, the label has handled music projects for several Hollywood producers, actors and singing stars,
including producer Peter Bogdanovich and singer Rosemary Clooney.
Noteworthy country hits on NSD have included “Yellow Pages” by Roger Bowling (writer of
Kenny Rogers’ hits “Lucille” and “Coward of the County”), later signed by Mercury Records. The group Foxfire and their hit single, “Fell Into Love”, was signed by Electra Records. Other artists
included Roy Head, Pake McEntire (Reba’s brother) and many others.
Gabriel Farago, owner of The Gabriel Music Group, himself had two of his five “Country Top
100” releases on the NSD label. His international Christmas hit “Two Step Texas Reindeer” was released by NSD in 2000.
NSD/Soundwaves Records has been the second highest charting independent label in the country
music industry. In all, it has had more than 80 nationally charted records in Billboard. As part of The Gabriel Music Group
, the label will continue to be a respected factor in the country music industry with plans to open Pop, Christian and R&B divisions as well. |
